Numerical Investigation of Self-Propulsion Performance and Noise Level of DARPA Suboff Model

Propulsion noise is an enduring problem of significant military and environmental importance. Hence, it crucial to investigate propeller characteristics. In this study, the hydrodynamic performance level DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) Suboff submarine with E1619 were analyzed. The hull resistance hydrodynamics studied separately, numerical results validated using available experimental values. self-propulsion point was determined by matching thrust following ITTC (International Towing Tank Conference) convention. Based on acoustic Ffowcs Williams–Hawkings (FW–H) models, underwater-radiated characteristics in state simulated. calculations indicated that contribution quadrupole term FW–H equation not negligible high-frequency band. Compared open-water propellers, spectrum its more complex, upstream amplified.
